God & Goddess motifs were commonly used in the embellishment of Victorian America. This motif can be found in Victorian American architecture, furnishings, home décor, and of course in silver and silver plated items. Many of the sculptural details that we find in silver, we find in homes and buildings from the same era.
On this page, we’ll feature the actual catalogue (circa 1870) from Meriden Britannia. It is interesting to see how accurate the artist’s representation is to the actual item (featured in the photo gallery).
At the bottom of the page, we’ll take a look at a handsome sculptured spout adorning a Victorian era ice pitcher. The visage is not of a god, but of a conquistador!

Boasting images of the North Wind and the Goddess Minerva the 1869 price for this set (as shown) would have been $63. $63 is equivalent to $1090.12 in 2019
